Cairns History

Founded in 1876, Cairns initially established to serve miners en-route to the Hodgkinson River goldfield in the tablelands to the west of the city.

After the construction of a regional railroad Cairns eventually developed into a regional hub, serving as a major export point for the agriculture produced on the lowlands and tablelands.

The city saw further development during WWII when it was used as a strategic base by both the Americans and the British for staging operations in the Pacific.

Cairns has come a long way from its rustic roots. Situated about 1,700 kilometres north of Brisbane and 2,700 kilometres north of Sydney, tourist flock to this city of 142,000 in search of tropical weather, beautiful beaches, excellent shopping, and a vibrant night-life.
